The great aim of education is not knowledge but action.
I often wonder why there is the segregation between the “smart” and “not smart” – in this context, SBC and Mainstream – your words, not mine.
I hear you say, “Dots. SBC girl lah.”, “Oh cheh, she’s in SBC.”, “Well duh, it’s SBC.” Why? Because the girl won some prize. =.=”
What’s the big deal? We aren’t that different from who you are, this coming from a person who has, inevitably, experienced both sides.
You know, I used to be immensely jealous of the “Gifted” and thus ‘Elite’, but now, being on that side of the fence, I see myself no different from who I was before. Well, perhaps a little, but honestly, no.
We have our own nerds, jocks and slackers, we have our own cool and uncool, we have our own hardships and competition as well. We have facebook, we have blogs, and we have msn, what makes us so different? Why are we so, if I may say, ostracized?
To you, we could seem naturally “smart and proud”, we could seem like “guai kias”, we are just the goody-goody-too-shoe nerds cum teacher’s pets next door. Truth be told, we’re not. There are people who work their asses off just to maintain the ‘standard’ of the class, there are people who bend the school rules – just no one knows, there are people who sleep in class – this in fact, is quite common, coming from this source, and there are people who hate school.
So what if teachers seem to ‘love’ us, we still get compared and criticized, so what if we win interclass (you do too), it’s just a game, not a life and death matter, so what?
Okay, so maybe some of us do pull our socks up above our ankles, maybe some of us do carry our textbooks everywhere, highlighting every word, maybe, just maybe, some of us are snooty in public or on the mic. stand/competitions. Just keep in mind, that’s a minority, that’s perhaps one to five of us, it’s not the majority. Why should we be stereotyped by the one or two of us who really stand out (in a negative context of course)?
At the end of the day, as Herbert Spencer once said, “The great aim of education is not knowledge but action.” It’s only for the few years of secondary school that you experience this “evil”, this “prejudice”, this “injustice”. Look at the big picture, when you and I get out into the working world, no one will care whether you were in SBC or in mainstream, “smart” or “not smart”, high or low PSLE score, what they will care about is your degree/level of education, and how efficient you are there. They’re concern will be on what you do with what you’ve got, not petty social status and allegedly ‘cool’ cliques. I was once told, “It's not where you're from. It's where you're at.”
